Motorola Unveils Moto Smart Speaker And It’s Incredibly Dumb
Motorola has just announced details of its latest Moto Mod accessory for the Moto Z family of devices: the Moto Smart Speaker, including support for the Amazon Alexa digital personal assistant. On the face of it, the Moto Smart Speaker has everything going for it. It attaches to the back of the Moto Z family of devices and gives up to fifteen hours of access to the Alexa assistant from the comfort and portability of your ‘phone. You can use the speaker for listening to music and Motorola state that it’s shaped so that the ‘phone faces the used when popped down. It also comes with it’s own charging port so it is independently charged.
This now means customers have another device to recharge at night, and the Moto Smart Speaker costs $150. For the sake of those dollars, customers can simply open the Alexa app, or access the Amazon shopping app, so it seems a bit over the top to pay so much for the Alexa-enabled speaker. Oh and there’s the small detail that the Moto Smart Speaker covers up the Moto Z’s camera. This means you have to remove the speaker to use the main camera. Luckily, Moto Mods do not require a device reboot, but it does mean one of the commands you likely won’t be using on the Moto Smart Speaker is, “Alexa, take a picture.”
Motorola has made some brilliant products in the past, from the original Moto X and Moto G, but today’s efforts are missing something. The Moto X4 looks interesting as it’s available as an Android One model, and means the device won’t suffer from Moto’s inability to update and support the software of their other devices.
