Some OnePlus Customers Warned By Google Play Protect About ‘FactoryMode’
OnePlus has very recently released a software update for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, bringing the software to OxygenOS 5.0.1. Unfortunately, one of the underlying applications embedded in this version of OxygenOS triggers a warning from Google’s Play Protect service. The warning is associated with the ‘FactoryMode’ application, and Play Protect prompts customers to remove the application. The reason? Because FactoryMode, “contains code that attempts to bypass Android’s security protections.”
On the face of it, this sounds scary. replaces what was previously known as EngineerMode, the pre-installed system app that could be exploited by a user with physical access to a device to gain root access. OnePlus ultimately removed the code responsible for this root method, and they also chose to rebrand EngineerMode as FactoryMode. Unfortunately, Google does not disclose what, exactly, triggers the alerts from the Play Protect application: the service is not perfect but is gaining data and experience the more it observes applications. In the case of FactoryMode, this is a pre-installed system application, so it already has deep access to the rest of the device. It would also seem unlikely that the FactoryMode could cause harm to the OnePlus 3 or OnePlus 3T: so why has the alert appeared? We cannot be sure of this until we hear from either OnePlus or Google.
As we wait for clarification, it appears that the update has been removed from the OnePlus servers. It’s possible that OnePlus are working on a fix, perhaps including discussing the matter with Google, and we may hear in early January 2018. Meanwhile, if you are using either the OnePlus 3 or OnePlus 3T and have received the software update, it is possible to remove the application (check out the source, XDA Developers, for more information). Or you can sit tight and enjoy your smartphone’s new features arriving with OxygenOS 5.0.1, which include aptX HD Bluetooth audio, and an adaptive screen calibration feature.
