Keeping Up With Facebook Posts You Haven’t Commented On
Over the years virtual language has evolved. Texting has its own language and so does social media. Most of the time the lingo is interchangeable. For example, a hashtag works the same on Twitter as it does on Instagram. You can click a thumbs up on Facebook and click a heart on Twitter. Everything pretty much works the same and most people know the ‘unwritten rules’.
There is one trend on Facebook, though, that needs to be stopped. I’m writing this article is to serve as an intervention of sorts. The issue? Using a dot on a post in order to receive notifications. People are no longer commenting things like “keep me posted.” No, they are typing a period. Just one. Just a .
Here, let me show you. You’ll notice the “.” after the person’s names:
So, you ask, why are they putting periods on posts like this? Well, the simple answer is that they want to be notified if there are any other comments about the subject. They are putting a LOT of pressure on that dot. I mean, it’s screaming “TELL ME EVERYTHING!” But what happens most of the time is other people are putting a period too. Now you’re getting notifications that say “Bob Smith said .” Over and over and over…. And the kicker is that by the time there is an actual update you are having to scroll through all the dots posted to even see it.
If only there were an easier, smarter way….(cue the infomercial music) Well, there IS a better way! Let me show you!
Let’s look at a post that you may want to keep up with. Now, commenting will cause notifications to kick in but only use this if you have something to say. Do NOT just comment with a period. Please, I’m begging you don’t do it! Look, right there in the drop down next to the post. When you click it you see a choice that says “Turn On Notifications For This Post” Click on that option and you will get all the updates to that post.
Alternatively, if you change your mind and you don’t want to be notified then choose the drop down again and stop the notifications. This is also a handy trick if you’ve been tagged in something and there are a lot of comments and you want the madness to stop.
Please share this with all of your friends. Because friends don’t let friends post periods to get social media updates.
