WhatsApp Introduces Location Sharing
WhatsApp, the instant messaging platform owned by Facebook, is in the process of introducing a real-time location sharing facility for customers all over the world. The new feature is called “Live Location,” and uses WhatsApp’s encryption technology. As we’ve come to expect from location sharing technologies, including Snapchat, WhatsApp’s Live Location technology allows customers to control who and for how long locations are shared with. You can specify to share a location for a set amount of time or permanently.
The option to share locations is available from the Attach button under “Location,” called “Share Live Location.” So far, so good – pick how long you want to share the location and everybody in the chat can see your location. All location information is shared on the same map in the case of a group conversation.
WhatsApp explain that the Live Location feature is coming soon to both the Android and iOS platforms in the coming weeks, so if you don’t have it at the moment, it will be added soon. It’s good to see what WhatsApp didn’t follow the Snapchat route of pestering users to add the location sharing feature before using the app – how many people tap “Agree” to everything because they are in the mentality of “I just want to use the app…”
