Accept Credit Cards on Android With Authorize.net
In the past I’ve written about a few different merchant providers and their applications for Android. I’ve moved on from those providers and have been using Authorize.net more recently for my business. Let me give some generic advice as it relates to shopping for a merchant provider (assuming you want to make a change or don’t currently have one), and then I will talk a little more specifically about Authorize.net.
Merchants VS Payment Gateways:
When looking for a way to accept credit cards for your business you will need a merchant provider and a payment gateway. Often these two services are provided by one single company (like in the case of Paypal), but more often you will be dealing with two companies. Generally you first apply for an account with a payment gateway and they will facilitate your application process with their various preferred merchants.
Pricing – What Are You Paying For:
There are a few different prices you need to keep an eye on. These are not limited to:
- Application or Setup Fees
- Transaction Fees
- Monthly fees
- PCI Compliance Fees
- Mobile Application Fees
Features You Should Be Looking For:
Your payment gateway can provide a lot of features and benefits. Your needs are specific to your business and you need to consider what really matters most to you but here is a good list to consider.
- Are they compatible with a large number of eCommerce/shopping cart providers and specifically the one you use or are considering using?
- Do they provide an online virtual terminal?
- Do they provide you with any hardware so you can swipe cards on site?
- Do they have a mobile application for your iPhone?
- How does their online reporting look?
- Do they provide recurring billing options for subscription type products?
- Processing Speed. How fast do funds get into your bank account?
I’ve worked with a large number of merchant providers and payment gateways over the years. Obviously, I care more than most about the mobile application functions and availability. I have settled with Authorize.net as my preferred gateway. They have been in the business for a long time and I’ve never found a shopping cart provider that isn’t compatible with Authorize.net.
Authorize.net has a super reliable application for Android. They released the application in the fall of 2012 and the user interface is clean and easy to use. Within the application you can set tax rates, include tips, and include product titles and descriptions. You can check transaction history and void or refund a transaction right from the app. You can also take signatures from customers on the app and email customers their receipts.
